The push for more supply
At the 2025 Plastics Recycling Conference, a panel discussed how resins like PP and HDPE hold potential for advancing U.S. plastics recycling but face challenges in material supply and public misconceptions.
Steve Alexander, President of the Association of Plastics Recyclers (APR), emphasized the need for standardized curbside collection to increase supply and reduce confusion. He noted that APR-affiliated reclaimers have the capacity to significantly boost recycling rates. However, to reach recycling goals, expanding collection programs and legislative support are crucial. The panel also highlighted the role of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in improving collection but raised concerns about its execution and impact on recyclers. Companies like ADS and KW Plastics are pushing for better recycling systems, but a more efficient, standardized collection infrastructure is needed to meet sustainability targets.
